It is complementary to modern medicine and is not meant as a replacement.

Additionally, it can be used on animals, horses, dogs, cats, rabbits, and even birds by their owners and JSJ practitioners.

Mary Burmeister described Jin Shin Jyutsu (translated from the Japanese as “Art of the Creator through Compassionate Man”) as a “physio-philosophy,” which is used by everyone unconsciously, doesn’t do anything, yet encompasses everything. Mary called it The Art of Life, The Art of Life Itself. It is the whole cosmos and cannot be categorized.”

The purpose of Jin Shin Jyutsu is to release the tensions that cause various physical symptoms. The body contains energy pathways that feed life into all cells. When one or more of these paths become blocked, the damming effect can lead to discomfort or pain. Jin Shin Jyutsu, re-harmonizes and balances the energy flow.

One of the most important and core elements of Jin Shin Jyutsu is the ability to perform, “Self Help.” Self-Help is a combination of simple and effective gentle holds and mudras that you can apply to yourself or others. Before that, it was an oral tradition passed down by word of mouth from generation to generation and gradually fell into disuse and was almost forgotten. It has been said, that Master Jiro Murai’s grandmother may have practiced some part of the Art.

Jiro Murai was born in 1886 in Taishoomura (Karga City) into a long-line of medical professionals. Both his father and eldest brother were medical doctors. As he was not the oldest son he was not required to follow the family tradition but instead as a young man he studied silkworm breeding at the university, living an excessive lifestyle and looking for extreme experiences.

In 1912 at the age of 26, he fell seriously ill and was diagnosed with a terminal illness which became the turning point in his life. His family was unable to help him and unable to walk he was carried on a stretcher to the isolated family cabin in the mountains, where he asked his family to collect his body after 7 days. Doomed to die, he wanted the solitude of the mountains.

He meditated and fasted, passing in and out of consciousness envisioning sages in spiritual meditation using hand mudras. He practiced the mudras which may have resembled familiar Buddha statues. On the 7th day, he experienced a fever in his body and became unconscious. Upon waking later that day he experienced a state of peace, joy, and gratitude and feeling recovered walked back into town. The people who saw him were amazed. What had happened he was supposed to die. Full of awe and gratitude he vowed to dedicate the rest of his life to the exploration of the mysteries of his healing.

Jiro Murai started research, he went to the mountains for weeks of meditation, fasting and practiced mudras and studied ancient writings (like the Yellow Emperor – a medical classic dating 2698-2598 BCE). Through meditation, he focused his attention inward and became aware of hidden forces present in all humans. During this process he witnessed the movement of certain energy flows through his body. Jiro Murai took notes and discovered, while studying the old scriptures, that the flows he had experienced were similar to the already known meridians, yet extended beyond that knowledge.

Murai studied the Chinese acupressure points, then took them a step further by experimenting on himself and fasting. He compared his experiences to the ancient acupuncture writings and what he felt. His experiences were much deeper than he found in the writings.

There is an awareness in Jin Shin Jyutsu that is deeper than technique.

At first, Jiro called it the “Art of Living,” and as things developed it became known as, “The Art of Happiness.” Later he called it The Art of Longevity,” because when people became healthier and stronger. Finally realizing it worked on a physical, mental, and spiritual level he called it, ‘Jin Shin Jyutsu,” – The Art of the Creator by Compassionate Man.

His scientific mind led him to do research, dissecting human bodies and cows heads which he purchased. There he found the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Things), written in 712 A.D. One night after a long meditation, Jiro Murai started writing. The interpretation of the Kojiki concerning the energetic and physical human body mysteriously came to him.

Thirty-four years after his initial JSJ experiences at the age of 60, Jiro Murai started giving lectures and delivered his last lecture in 1957 at the age of 71 – three years before his death.
